Happy Hump Day!! On Sunday we moved into our urban homes where we will be staying for the next 3 weeks. I am happy to report that my family has welcomed me with open arms and I am at home here. Now that we are back from Tanzania it means that it is back to class for the next 3 weeks. Our professors have wasted no time getting back to business as we all took a Swahili exam this morning. In addition to Swahili I am taking a Social Political Government class which I love! We have a wonderful professor who is both lively and informative. It has been very interesting to learn about the Kenyan politics in class and then go home and see what we are learning on the news. I am also taking a Biodiversity and Conservation in Eastern Africa which is also very interesting. Yesterday we had a 2 hour debate on whether to help maintain the environment should we control human population or our carbon foot print. Really I am enjoying every signal one of our classes. Oh and don't worry I am not going on all these amazing field trips just for fun, with each trip and homestay we go on, a paper and presentation is always waiting for us when we return.
Every morning I get picked up from the house at 7:30am by the taxi driver and then go pick up another student who lives close to me. We arrive at school around 8:15-8:30 depending on traffic. We have class throughout the day. I am usually done by 2:45 but have to wait for the two other students I ride home with to be done at 4:30. While I wait I usually use the gym which is small but I am grateful to have. So here is where my dumb blonde moment comes in. Yesterday my friend and I went to use the treadmill. I ran for 50 minutes so I know I went far but when I looked at the distance on the treadmill it said 9. In my head I was thinking that 9 meant 9 miles which I knew there was no way in the world I had ran that fast. I love running and all by I am not a cheetah. When I got off I said to my friend "these treadmills are so off with the distance, there is no way I ran that far" she looks at me and goes "Carolyn we are in Kenya it is in kilometers". I had to laugh at myself. I guess I am still adjusting to some things in Kenya :)
