This past week was finals week here in Kenya. So of course you have to find a way to procrastinate writing all those essays, and whats better way than throwing an early Thanksgiving for 50 people? Starting on Wednesday we took over the kitchen and started baking and cooking around the clock. We had to get creative since not all the ingredients we have in the US can be found in Kenya. For example, there is no corn starch so honey had to be used for the pecan pie, which actually turned out well. Also chocolate chips simply do not exist here, so we had to chop up blocks of chocolate for the banana bread. Friday was spent cleaning the house, which desperately needed it, and making final trips to the market. Some how we managed to pull it off, with almost all the food being cooked by the 20 of us (we had to get some help with the turkey from our cook). Our professors rented a tent and everyone from our teachers to the guards came to join in an early Thanksgiving. It was now our turn to share our culture. I will say though that they did not seem to enjoy our SWEET desserts as much as we did. The whole reason we did this early is because today we all went our separate ways, because for the next month we are all doing independent internship. Let the adulating begin! I am now living in an apartment in Nairobi. Stay tuned to see how having to be an adult treats me :)
